North Yorkshire LEADER Programmes Celebrate at Fountains Abbey

Despite the rain, wind and mist, the beautiful Fountains Abbey near Ripon hosted the first ever joint Local Action Group event of the North York Moors, Coast and Hills and the Yorkshire Dales LEADER Programmes.

The event was held to celebrate the successes of each Programme highlighted in the recently completed Programme Evaluations, and introduce LAG members from across North Yorkshire to the next Rural Development Programme and the priorities of the York North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership.

David Wilford, Head of the Rural Communities Policy Unit at Defra was the Keynote speaker for the day and outlined the national and European context within with LEADER operates, as well as the broad parameters of the next Rural Development Programme from 2014 to 2020.

The conference continued with presentations from both the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust with their reflections on the successes of the current programmes, and looking to the future as we approach the period of transition between the close of this Programme in March 2014 and the start of a new Programme in 2015.

James Farrar, Chief Operating Officer of the York North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership (YNYER LEP) provided an update on the 5 priority areas the LEP are looking at to support and encourage economic growth. All speakers emphasised the need to ensure that the priorities of the next LEADER Programmes and the LEP align and complement each other.

The morning session was concluded with workshop groups where delegates discussed how and where LEADER activity could fit with the priorities of both the LEP and the new Rural Development Programme.  This was a great start to thinking about how our Programmes could move forwards and take on a greater role in delivering and supporting more economic activity.

Following lunch, the day was rounded off with presentations from Jessica Sellick and Ivan Annibal of Rose Regeneration who undertook the final external evaluations of both Programmes.  This continued the theme of celebrating the successful delivery of both Programmes and outlined a number of recommendations for the future.
